IMPACT & LEGACY

Through the Games and Beyond the Games, the Invictus Games Foundation has influenced research and knowledge by sharing best practice, around trauma, recovery, rehabilitation, and the power of sport. Previous Games have helped to changed attitudes towards disability and mental health, supported rehabilitation and recovery and encouraged positive and sustainable change.

The Impact & Legacy programme for the Birmingham Event complements the Invictus Games Foundation’s significant work.

Every Games has contributed to wider change; challenging perceptions of disability, raising awareness of the challenges of hidden wounds and giving a platform for best practice in recovery to be shared; while supporting the individual recovery journey for thousands of participants and their families.

Within the UK-Birmingham Bid; a comprehensive strategic and collaborative programme of impact & legacy activities will be rolled out from 2025; in the two year run up to the Games; complementing the excellent wider Beyond the Games work undertaken by the Invictus Games Foundation.

Supported by our Founding Partners, all of our initial work will be developed further into comprehensive, collaborative strategies with measurable KPIs and outcomes. Within our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion strategy; we would like to amplify stories and lived experiences; from both the Invictus Community, and from within the city of Birmingham- the youngest major city in Europe, with under 25s accounting for nearly 40% of the city’s population.

With the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, the region is already a renowned centre of excellence for defence medical research and exchange of good practice with other nations such as Ukraine. We would build on these strong foundations within our impact and legacy plans to deliver longer term sustainable change.

The Birmingham Games has a multifaceted approach to legacy under 5 key headings:

Stronger positive integration between Armed Forces and civilian communities.

Amplifying the vision of a global community of Invictus participants.

Recognising and supporting the families.

Creating a benchmark for ongoing excellence in research.

Improve pathways - for both adaptive sport; and wider forms of support for veterans and families.
